"Watercolours 1" is part of Eastern Scenes, a body of work in which Ali Hassan approaches the Arabic letter as a visual form that carries history, identity, and cultural memory. Rather than functioning as text, the letter emerges as a living visual element shaped by flowing lines and layered compositions. Through this calligraphic abstraction, the work creates a dialogue between beauty and meaning, balancing tradition with contemporary expression. The composition reflects the spiritual and aesthetic dimensions of Arabic calligraphy, revealing ornament, color, and rhythm as carriers of cultural wisdom. Ali Hassan, born in Doha in 1956, is one of Qatar’s most celebrated artists. He began his training in Arabic calligraphy in 1972 while working in local newspapers, later expanding his practice through workshops and graphic art studies in Belgium and Cairo. Over several decades, Hassan has developed a distinctive semi-abstract style that blends vibrant color with calligraphic form across painting, watercolor, sculpture, and installation. His work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions in cities including Tokyo, Zurich, Paris, and New York, and is held in numerous museum collections worldwide. A self-taught artist, he holds a BA in History from Qatar University and received the State Encouragement Award in Fine Arts. He was appointed an expert in fine arts by the Ministry of Justice.
