About the art
01Al Shamal is a site-specific sculptural work by Heiko Zahlmann that explores the relationship between tradition, modernity, and the natural character of place. Named after the Shamal wind, the artwork draws on ideas of movement, openness, and transformation. Zahlmann translates his abstract visual language, rooted in typography and ornament, into white concrete, a material associated with permanence and stability, yet shaped in a way that appears light, dynamic, and in motion. The word "Shamal" appears in a highly abstract form, shifting between stillness and flow, echoing the rhythm and unpredictability of wind. Through ornament, repetition, and the tension between geometry and fluidity, the work brings together the tangible and the intangible, inviting reflection on change, continuity, and the evolving identity of its surroundings. Heiko Zahlmann began his artistic practice in graffiti in 1989 and later became a pioneer of stylewriting through three-dimensional typographic works. From the mid-1990s onward, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in lettering while moving toward greater abstraction. Although self-taught, he began collaborating with architects in 1993, deepening his sculptural approach and spatial understanding. By 2002, he shifted away from canvas and adopted concrete as his primary medium, marking a return to the urban environment that shaped his early work. His practice has since expanded beyond painting into site-specific sculptures that engage directly with public space.
