About the art
01In Untitled, Adel el Siwi explores the face as a site of tension between concealment and revelation. The work moves between the idea of the mask, which fixes the face into a single emotional state, and the portrait, which draws the viewer beyond outward features into an inner psychological space. Here, the face is chromatically separated from the mass of the head, becoming a luminous surface that shifts subtly with the direction of the gaze and the movement of the mouth. Although the subject is a woman, her features are deliberately restrained, lending the face a sculptural presence that recalls the solidity of an ancient carved head. The image feels alert and taut, as if anticipating something unseen, yet simultaneously withdrawn into an interior world marked by silence and introspection. Adel el Siwi is an Egyptian artist born in Beheira in 1952. Trained initially in medicine, he later devoted himself fully to art, studying independently at the Faculty of Fine Arts before spending a decade in Milan and eventually returning to Cairo, where he lives and works. His practice is deeply rooted in figurative painting, with a sustained focus on the human face as a bearer of psychological, cultural, and symbolic meaning. El Siwi has participated in major international exhibitions and biennials, and his works are held in prominent museum collections including the British Museum, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.
