About the art

01

Doha Painting is a monumental abstract work by Judy Ledgerwood that explores the perceptual effects and expressive power of color, pattern, and scale. Commissioned by Northwestern University as a gift to Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the painting responds to the architecture of the College of Media and Communication in Qatar and to Ledgerwood’s site visit to Doha and the surrounding desert. The composition evokes shifting desert light and the blue waters of the Gulf, while dramatic changes in color temperature and pattern create optical effects that unfold over time. The work appears to hang on its support like a textile, reinforcing its relationship to surface, structure, and movement. Judy Ledgerwood is an American painter and ceramicist, and Emeritus Professor at Northwestern University. Known for her large-scale abstract works, her practice challenges conventions around decoration and gender in painting through bold use of color and form. Ledgerwood has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, and her work is held in major public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Tiffany Award in the Visual Arts and a National Endowment for the Arts Award.
