About the art

01

In Situations 3, Hamza Bounoua explores the relationship between light and darkness not as opposing forces but as complementary states. At the center of this interaction is the letter, treated not as text to be read, but as a visual and contemplative form. Rooted in the tradition of Houroufia, the letter is released from its linguistic function and transformed into a visual presence that gives structure to silence and introduces movement into stillness. Darkness becomes the space from which light emerges, while the letter acts as the point where this transformation takes place. The work invites viewers to experience the letters intuitively, as pulses of energy and moments of reflection, rather than as readable symbols. Hamza Bounoua is a contemporary Algerian artist born in 1979. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Algeria and draws inspiration from Amazigh, Arab, and Islamic visual traditions, with a strong focus on contemporary calligraphic abstraction. His work has been exhibited internationally, including in the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and Dubai, and is held in collections such as the Dafen Art Museum and the Barjeel Art Foundation. Bounoua has also participated in major international auctions and served as curator of the International Festival of Contemporary Art in Algeria.
