About the art

01

The Thinker is a sculptural work by Souad Al Salem inspired by an encounter with a small figurative sculpture discovered during a visit to Khan Al-Khalili in Cairo. Drawn to the piece for its quiet representation of humanity, the artist brought it back to her studio, where the way light and shadow fell across its form became a source of daily reflection. Observing how sunlight interacted with the figure, casting shadows, revealing contours, and shifting throughout the day, sparked a deeper contemplation that ultimately informed the creation of this work. The sculpture reflects a meditative engagement with the human presence, shaped by light, stillness, and observation. Souad Al Salem is a Qatari artist who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Qatar University. She currently serves as an art advisor at the Supreme Education Council and is Head of the Arts and Theater Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Her practice reflects an ongoing commitment to art education and cultural development in Qatar.
