About the art
01No. 154 [Diptych] marks an early moment in Rana Begum’s evolving exploration of geometry, form, and the shifting presence of light. The work investigates how flat surfaces can be manipulated to create sculptural depth, as panels fold, bend, and transition between two and three dimensions. Referencing architectural facades and structural detailing, the monochromatic corrugated panels alternate between horizontal and vertical orientations. This restrained composition draws attention to subtle interactions between light and shadow, as edges sharpen, surfaces shift, and perception changes with the viewer’s position. Rana Begum is a London-based artist whose practice distills spatial and visual experience into ordered form. Working across sculpture, painting, and architecture, she draws on minimalist abstraction alongside influences from the urban environment and geometric patterns found in Islamic art and architecture. Light plays a central role in her work, activating surfaces and producing sensory experiences that change over time.
