About the art

01

Described by its creator Shirazeh Houshiary as "a state of flux", White Shadow is constructed from stacked hollow white aluminum bricks arranged to form an ascending spiral movement. Inspired by the spiraling minaret of Al-Mutawakkil's Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq, this artwork evokes aspirations towards spirituality and the philosophical ideals of perfection associated with Sufism. White Shadow seamlessly integrates with its equally white surroundings, fulfilling the artist's intention to evoke absence of form, absence of mass, and presence of shadow. Successfully achieving this goal, the piece strives to embody a state between being and nonbeing. Despite its subtlety, White Shadow commands a unique presence within the 2015 building's environment, compelling all visitors to circumnavigate it upon entering or leaving the premises of the Qatar Foundation Headquarters.
