About the art
01The marble art installation adorning the entrance of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar's (VCUarts Qatar) second building is a striking work of art that represents a fusion of modern architecture and traditional Middle Eastern symbolism. Completed in 2010, this building spans 11,500 square meters and was constructed to accommodate the growing student population at VCUarts Qatar. The piece, crafted by the renowned Iraqi sculptor Ahmad al Bahrani, uses intricate marble panels to depict classic symbols deeply tied to Qatari heritage, such as the falcon, camel, dhow boat, and astrolabe. Each element serves as a nod to the rich cultural and historical landscape of the Arabian Peninsula. The falcon, for example, is a symbol of power and nobility, while the camel represents endurance and survival in the desert. The dhow boat, a traditional vessel, is a reminder of maritime exploration and trade. Meanwhile, the astrolabe, an ancient navigational instrument, connects the piece to the region's pioneering advancements in science and navigation.
