About the art
01Malwiya was created by Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani to represent a form of old currency that was once used in the Gulf countries. Drawing on the region's rich history and cultural heritage, the artwork merges tradition with contemporary art, serving as a reflection of the Gulf's economic evolution. The piece was specifically designed to be installed in front of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, a prestigious institution that has earned global recognition for its undergraduate Business Administration program, which plays a key role in shaping future leaders in the region. Engraved on the artwork are two significant sentences. The first, "عمل حسن," translates to “good work,” and is inspired by a phrase found on ancient Islamic artifacts, "ما عمل صلح," which conveys the idea of virtuous and righteous deeds. The second engraving, “ضرب في قطر,” translates to "made in Qatar," highlighting the local context and the piece's roots in the country’s cultural and economic landscape. Both engravings are written in the artist's own handwriting, adding a personal and authentic touch to the artwork.
