About the art
01Damien Hirst has been creating and working with installations, sculptures, paintings, and drawings since the late 1980s. These works often examine complex relationships between art and beauty, religion and science, and life and death. From serialized paintings of multi-coloured spots to animal specimens preserved in tanks of formaldehyde, his work challenges contemporary belief systems and artistic practices. Hirst’s work, The Miraculous Journey, is located in front of Sidra Medicine, a state-of-the-art hospital that specializes in women’s and children’s healthcare. It consists of fourteen monumental bronze sculptures that depict the fetus’ growth inside the womb during multiple gestation periods that ultimately end with the birth of an anatomically correct baby boy. Its proximity to the hospital speaks of the beauty of the extraordinary process of human and scientific development, occurring every day at Sidra Medicine as well as across the globe. The Miraculous Journey invites viewers to reflect on the wonders of life, childbirth, and the scientific and artistic exploration of human existence. In doing so, it fosters important discussions about human development, healthcare, and the shared experiences across cultures. It serves as a powerful symbol of the miraculous journey of life and the beauty of human potential.
