About the art
01In Date Tree Leaves, Yousef Ahmad draws on the enduring presence of the date palm to reflect a deep connection to Qatari heritage and the natural environment. Using the delicate structure of palm leaves as both material and motif, the work forms circular compositions that evoke fossilized imprints or ancient maps of organic life. The textured surface invites close observation, revealing the quiet beauty of a plant that has long sustained Gulf communities. Through the transformation of a humble natural element into a refined artistic form, the work becomes a meditation on memory, tradition, and continuity. Yousef Ahmad is a pioneering Qatari artist, curator, and educator whose practice has played a central role in the development of modern art in Qatar. He studied fine arts at Helwan University in Cairo and earned a master’s degree in painting from Mills College in California. His work spans calligraphy, painting, and mixed media, frequently incorporating elements of the palm tree and Arabic script. Ahmad has exhibited internationally, and his works are held in prominent collections including the British Museum and Mathaf. He lives and works in Doha.
