Dr. M. Tarek Swelim is an associate professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). His research interests include Islamic Cairo, Mamluk Period (1250–1517), Early Period of Islamic Egypt, Bilad al-Sham, Ancient Egypt and Egyptology.

Dr. Swelim’s is the author of Ibn Tulun: His Lost City and Great Mosque (AUC Press, 2015) and Mamluk History and Architecture (AUC Press, 2010). Dr. Swelim has also contributed to the exhibition catalogue, ‘The Arabesque: An Introduction’ (IAMM Publications, 2018), which was launched at the British Museum in London.

Dr. Swelim holds a PhD in Islamic art and architecture from Harvard University and a Master of Arts degree from the American University in Cairo, Egypt.
