Dr. Hanan Farhat is the founder and director of the Corrosion Center at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), under Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), and is one of the leading experts on corrosion and materials engineering in the region. Her research interests include environmentally assisted cracking, atmospheric corrosion, pipeline integrity management, and materials selection.

Dr. Farhat is a registered professional Canadian Engineer and holds international certifications in corrosion and inspection engineering. She represents Qatar in the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for corrosion standards, and the Gulf Standards Committee for Oil and Gas.

Dr. Farhat is one of the founders and the Chairperson of Qatar’s Association for Corrosion and Materials Engineering. She is also a women’s rights advocate; she established the Qatar Association for Women Engineers in 2020, where she currently holds the Chairperson position.

Dr. Farhat’s most recognized publications include “Hydrogen Sulfide Tube Failure in a Seawater Heat Exchanger”, Materials Performance Journal (2017), and “An Investigation of Corrosion Behaviour of a FeNiCoAlTa Shape Memory Alloy in 3.5 wt. % NaCl Solution”, Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology Jr (2018).

Dr. Farhat has a Ph.D. in corrosion engineering and a master’s in materials and mechanical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Her bachelor’s degree was in materials and metallurgical engineering from Tripoli University, Libya.
