Qatar Foundation hosted Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex, Sophie, on 24 September 2013. A welcoming committee received the Countess and her delegation at the Qatar Foundation Visitors Center.
Her Royal Highness, who is travelling with the sight-saving charity Orbis, is eager to build upon the strong partnerships and alliances that were forged last year when Orbis made its inaugural visit to Qatar. Her mission to raise the standards of healthcare globally is in line with Qatar Foundation’s ongoing efforts to foster valuable collaborations and find solutions to meet international healthcare challenges.
As a long-standing patron of global initiatives to prevent and treat blindness among underprivileged communities around the world, the Countess of Wessex is leading a series of events and meetings in Qatar, in order to engage the philanthropic community.
The Countess of Wessex and her delegation were first shown a presentation that outlined the vision and mission of Qatar Foundation. They were also introduced to Qatar Foundation’s many educational initiatives, community development plans, and scientific research programs.
During the visit, the Countess was also briefed on Qatar Foundation’s various sustainability initiatives and climate action solutions. After the presentation, she was shown an impressive 3D scale model of the buildings and construction projects that are underway at Qatar Foundation.
Her Royal Highness expressed her steadfast commitment to raising international awareness about the prevention and treatment of blindness, which affects approximately 1.5 million children around the world.
As the visit to Qatar Foundation drew to a close, the Countess signed the visitor’s book and was later accompanied on a tour of Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.
The Countess’s visit to Doha, in conjunction with Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, is part of the organization’s goodwill tour to build on the crucial support that enables it to expand its sight-saving efforts throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America.
