A Step Forward: Qatar Elections and the Role of Women in the Shura Council

In November 2020, His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, announced that Shura Council elections would be taking place for the first time in 2021. The date was subsequently set to be on 2 October 2021. The list of candidates shows that there are 294 candidates representing different parts of the country, among whom 29 are women. Voters will elect 30 members of the 45-seat council, while His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani will appoint the remaining 15 members.
