Maha El Akoum is the Head of Content and a Research Fellow at WISH. Her particular research interests include genomics and precision medicine, global health, health policy, healthcare innovation, and health systems development. In addition, with a strong interest in patient safety, Maha has led several initiatives on a national level, such as the Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety in collaboration with MedStar Health, as well as spearheading several research projects looking into the role of nurses in creating a culture of safety. Being a Research Fellow for the WISH Islamic Bioethics series, Maha has managed the forums since the beginning of her journey at WISH in 2015, where she co-authored the Palliative Care and Islamic Ethics report launched at WISH 2018. Maha also managed what was formerly known as the WISH Young Innovators program from 2015–2019, where she was involved in the shortlisting of the candidates and overall execution of the program. Maha graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences in biological sciences from the American University of Beirut, and a Master of Public Health degree from Imperial College London. She is also a PhD candidate in Genomics and Precision Medicine at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Qatar.
