LAKOM AL KARAR

Lakom Al Karar - which in English means 'The Decision is Yours' - is a televised discussion program in Arabic, broadcast monthly on Qatar TV across the Arab world.

In this open forum, young Qataris have a direct line of communication to challenge their leaders on public policy.

In this open forum, young Qataris have a direct line of communication to challenge their leaders on public policy.

Each broadcast focuses on a topical issue of importance to Qatar, the region and the wider Arab world. A high-profile figure is questioned by a mainly student audience, while a young moderator steers and stimulates the discussion. At the end of the program the audience votes on the question at hand.

Issues under the spotlight have included: the rights of the disabled; educational reforms in Qatar; Qatar's currency peg to the dollar; and the Gulf Cooperation Council's attitude to the wishes of the region's youth.

Guests have included: HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani; HE Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al-Thani; and the Director of the Supreme Education Council's Higher Education Institute, Dr Jehan Al-Meer.

The programs have already had a direct impact nationally, including a clampdown on dangerous driving on Qatar's roads and the reduction of 3G mobile video call rates for the deaf and mute.

In 2007, its second year, Lakom Al Karar attracted 70-per-cent viewing ratings on Qatar TV and was voted the most popular television program by readers of a national Arabic-language daily.

By encouraging young people to engage with their wider community and important issues in public life, Lakom Al Karar helps students develop citizenship skills and a sense of social responsibility. The program reflects Qatar Foundation's commitment to transparency and accountability as features of a successful participative society.
