
Doha 22 May 2008 - Recognizing the importance of science for the prosperity of their societies, Qatar Foundation and the Royal Society of London, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to join efforts in promoting a better understanding of scientific research and activities in both countries and on an international level.
The MOU was signed by Dr. Fathy Saoud, President of Qatar Foundation and Lord Rees of Ludlow, President of Royal Society of London. Under the terms, representatives of the Royal Society and Qatar Foundation will remain in close contact to keep each other informed of scientific developments, areas of scientific excellence and initiatives of interest taking place in both countries.
According to the agreement the first joint initiatives to be delivered include:
1) Distinguished lecture series covering a broad array of topics as organised by either Qatar Foundation or the Royal Society
2) International conferences on science and policy issues concerning energy, climate and environment
The agreement also stipulated that the Royal Society of London will involve its extensive international network of scientists and research fellows in future Qatar Foundation projects to guarantee a high level of cooperation.
The Royal Society is the independent scientific academy of the UK and the Commonwealth dedicated to promoting excellence in science. The Society plays an influential role in national and international science policy and supports developments in science engineering and technology in a wide range of ways.
